John’s Roast Pork
It’s Thursday the 24th and today is officially my first full day here in Philly. I woke up ready to absorb the culture here in Philadelphia and learn about American history.
I joined the Constitutional walking tour of Philadelphia which is a 90-minute walking tour around famous historical sights of the city. Lectures and key notes were also given on each distinct location and knowledge was certainly passed on to our group. After the tour I visited the liberty bell which is arguably the most iconic symbol of Pennsylvania.
All this quench for knowledge though has started to build my appetite and it being my first day here a Philly Cheesesteak should be in order. There’s been quite a debate on where I should go first but weighing in on all the suggestions, I opted to visit John’s Roast Pork on 14 Snyder Avenue as to break my Cheesesteak fast. This place has been suggested by many and even our tour guide have it the thumbs up. Awarded a James Beard Award for Excellence John’s Roast Pork was also voted best Cheesesteak in Philadelphia by celebrity judges.
This was such a hot sunny afternoon that I am already starting to feel a bit dehydrated and while queuing up to place my order I was ready to eat 10 sandwiches. I patiently waited for my turn and asked the cashier what I should order, and she told me to try both the Philly cheesesteak and roast pork Italian sandwich which I did.
The cheesesteak was phenomenal, the bread was soft, the beef was flavorful and tender, and the cheese was perfect. I could have not asked for a better lunch today and I was only halfway done.
The roast pork Italian was another thing of beauty as well with the spinach and juicy pork. I thank the Gods for allowing me to be here and be able to experience this sandwich heaven even for a bit…
