Pig Heaven

NYC

It’s my first day back in NYC and after spending 5 days out in Philly and as you can tell I’ve had an abundance of Beef so decided to go for some pork today. What better place to visit for some pork dishes than Pig Heaven.

Located at 1420 3rd Avenue on the UES. Specializing in Taiwanese style cooking Nancy Lee’s Pig Heaven has been serving the neighborhood for over25 years. I’ve been wanting to come here for quite some time now and looks like today is my lucky day.

I slowly worked my way up 80th Street from my and with a sprained and swollen foot it was not an easy task. Upon reaching 3rd Avenue and turning right I was greeted by the bright pink pig standing on the middle of the sidewalk and hanging on the wall. I knew that I was at the right place already and that pork ribs were not too far from my sight.

I made my way into the dining room and was ushered to the corner table where my feast for the day was to commence. After a heavy swim session earlier during the day and an emotionally draining Spain vs Croatia knockout match my appetite was well built.

I started my meal with the pork shu mai and roast pork bun which I usually order everytime I come to a Chinese restaurant. The roast pork bun was exquisite, it was steaming hot, and the farce meat was caramelized while the shu mai was on point as well with both the flavor and texture.

The crystal shrimp dumpling is another favorite of mine and their version of har gaw is every bit as good as the others I’ve tried. The silky wrapper and steamed shrimp are best tried after dipping in the various sauces.

Now the chicken and shrimp yangchow fried rice arrived at my table accompanied by the star of the show, the pork bbq spareribs. I honestly haven’t had any Asian styled ribs in quite some time now and have forgotten how good they are.

The ribs were perfectly cooked, braised nice and slow with the meat moist and the glaze caramelized with the crisp skin to give it a nice texture. After having about 4 pcs, I was in a food coma already and was in pig heaven. This was the perfect way to get back to eating around NYC…
