Franklin Barbecue
BBQ is American and BBQ is Texas and in Austin one king remains supreme amongst all the fire pits and that’s Franklin Barbecue located on 900 E 11TH Street. Since I was living in San Francisco in 2006 I’ve been hearing about this place and how good the food is.
It’s become one of America’s most identifiable household names when it comes to Texas BBQ. Texas Monthly has said that Franklin’s is serving the best barbecue in the known universe. On this day on the 25th of May I am finally able to break my fast with the meat from this world-famous smokehouse.
Due to the current pandemic situation, they have pivoted to a pick-up system only that is available from their website. I placed my order a month in advance and scheduled my curbside pick-up for the first slot in the morning which is at 10:30 am. The team has methodically come up with a system where you arrive at your slotted time and park your vehicle in the lot and instructions will be given to you. You are to text a # on the placard in front of your vehicle your parking # and then it will prompt you to text your receipt # while you patiently wait in your car. A team member will come in to check your name and if you have the right parking slot and ticket # before prompting you to pop your trunk. Another team member will bring your food and ask you to verify the contents before heading out.
After I double checked my ordered and headed back to my hotel, I was beginning to get so excited with the meal that I was about to have. Everything was set up for take away that I knew my hotel room was going to smell like a butcher carving station, but I did not mind as I knew this would be an epic meal. As I laid out the butcher paper on the table and the aromas slowly started coming out and spreading through the room. The pulled pork was the first I opened, and this was indeed the best I’ve had in my entire life.
The brisket was next, and this was so perfectly cooked and so juicily tender that I almost ate an entire pound for breakfast. I had to save some room for the ribs as well and they did not disappoint either as the meat was falling off the bone tender and packed with so much flavor. I barely even touched the coleslaw and potato salad which were both equally impressive on their own. This meal in my hotel room was slowly taking me into a trance as the barbecue gods are taking over. I could not finish the meal without trying a Texan style pecan pie and this is one decision I do not regret. Franklin barbecue, thank you for making food and sharing it with us…
