Sugar Cane

It’s Thursday evening and I’m stuck in traffic in my Uber first at Arthur Godfrey Rd and again on I-195 W which I guess is quite standard here in Miami at 7 pm of any day. Sugarcane located in midtown Miami came highly recommended by a good friend of mine who also works in the hospitality industry.

Upon finally arriving at my destination, it was so pleasant to see the place starting to get packed. The bar motive and outdoor patio clearly sets the tone and vibe of the evening that we’re in for a fun tropical night.

Our first order of business for the evening were some cocktails, and we both had “Vida de Fresca” to start with which was with mezcal, tequila, strawberry jam, lime and pineapple juice and garnished with fresh jalapeño. This was equally part refreshing and flavorful and had a good kick to it as well. They were not too difficult to finish as well

Our first set of appetizers arrived at the table simultaneously and I was so happy to see both of them.

The goat cheese croquettes were perfectly golden brown and it had guava jam syrup for it’s base to give the dish a sweet component.

HAMACHI-TAQUITO.jpg

The Hamachi taquito which had avocado cream, charred corn and ginger garlic soy sauce was outstanding. The crispiness of the shell with the flavors of the Hamachi and richness of the avocado cream along with the smokiness of the charred corn made this a perfect taquito bite.

The next cocktail I ordered was The Old World which had premium gin, Averna amaro, cardamom bitters and prosecco. Being a gin lover myself this was a classic drink that had a very Italian summer feel to it. Our next set of dishes to arrive were the crunchy tuna rolls and crispy rice roll.

CRISPY-RICE.jpg

The crispy rice roll was so good with the yellowtail and kimchi slaw that sat on top of the crispy rice. I must admit that I don’t order crispy rice that often, but this dish will surely change that.

CRISPY-TUNA.jpg

The crunchy tuna roll with avocado, spicy tempura flakes and sweet chili was by far my favorite of the 2. The spicy tempura flakes gave the roll a nice crunch and the sweet chili sauce was the perfect balance of flavors that blended well with the tuna.

DUCK-FRIED-RICE.jpg

Our lone main course for the evening was the house favorite duck fried rice which had shredded duck, coriander, egg and sweet soy sauce. This reminded me of an Indonesian fried rice dish that I would eat when I was visiting my brother in Jakarta in the past when he was still based there.

At this point we were both so full already but we could not leave the premises before we tried the “Torrejas” which is a dulce de leche soaked French toast, maple caramelized apples with cinnamon ice cream. The dulce de leche was not too sweet and the apples complimented the bread and ice cream well. This dessert had so many flavors in it that even though we were both so full we still finished it in less than 2 minutes, that’s how good it was.

#KULINARYATRAVELS is off to Uchi Miami next for some Sushi and Sake…
